Family Finances Friday.
Matthew 14: 20- "They all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained"
Twice did Jesus perform miracles that fed thousands of people and twice were the remnants packed; with the exact number of baskets mentioned. Has it ever occurred to you that if Jesus could have made a fish vomit a coin, He could have used another means to generate loads of money that would have been enough to buy bread and fish for the crowd? He didn't do that, He only multiplied an existing resource; five loaves of bread and two fish. Why waste heaven's resources when there's an easier, less money- consuming way. Jesus personally detested wastage.
A lot of people have wasteful tendencies and it starts from little things. Why would you serve yourself a plate of food; whether at home or at a buffet table what you can not finish? At parties, in a buffet setting, you see some people serving themselves what they won’t even finish ….Haha, that’s not nice! Would you be kind enough to allow the Caterer go home with the remaining food and give them out to her neighbors’; they’d be glad! Have you seen people rummaging through dunghills to get food before...?
Usually there is an overflow into our finances such attitude of wastage.
Let's look at few practical areas......
Recently, I brought out a Pair of brand new shoes I had been given since 2011; they were peeling already. OMG, I could have given them out and gotten the blessings of a giver, I felt terrible. Some can’t even afford school shoes. My wedding shoes are still in the pack( I haven’t worn it since after then). Maybe I’d keep it for one of my son’s wives….Hehe, teasing. 100 shoes on your shoe rack and we are still counting. If we don't have a savings that surpasses the value of our shoes, then it’s time to reassess our priorities.
It’s a beautiful thing to get pregnant; a gift of the Lord but it’s not necessarily a time to spend so much money on maternity wears when it’s just a journey of 9 months( well, they can be kept for the next baby and then the next baby and then the next; but don’t trends change?). Children are so cute and sometimes we are tempted to buy the same cloth in different colours. Buy months ahead for them because they outgrow their clothes quickly!
One of my Mentors would say some are wearing as clothes the cement bags they should have used in building their houses. Dress well, but Dress your destiny too, Look good physically, but within the confines of what you can afford per time. When your finances look good, you have an inner peace that surpasses the feeling you have when people compliment you on looking good.
I won’t flog the aso-ebi issue again but I must say it’s one of the wasters of resources in this part of the world. You probably should do a yard sales for all those things you are not using; especially the new ones. Toss the proceeds into your savings. How about even giving stuffs to the Internally Displaced People, and the needy.
One day , I went for a meeting with someone somewhere in the US and I had my 2 phones with me; and as usual, I needed to charge one of the phones and as I asked her if I could use one of her charging points; she exclaimed , you’ve got 2 phones? Hmmmn. Some have 3. Mummy has 2 phones, Daddy has 3, Jayden has 1, Jennifer has 1; all with internet subscription. How about getting a dual-sim phone? Having Wifi at home could minimize what we spend on mobile data sometimes. When you are home, just switch over to Wifi and it’ll serve all your gadgets. Some ISPs in Nigeria offer midnight free browsing.
Cables/ TV DSTV
You subscribe for all channels and you are hardly home. It’s probably time to reassess. There are usually options.
Do you really need to go to to the gym to exercise? If you need it for discipline reasons, then you could, continue but reassess the need from time to time.
Other Little Areas of Wastage we might want to look into:
1. Water waste: One gallon of water to brush your teeth, two buckets to bathe; even if it’s a borehole supplying you, you can elongate the life of the washing machine.
2. Food – Don’t leave stuffs in the refrigerator until they get spoilt.
3. Ziplock bags: Little but adds up over time. Most times , we use them for any and everything
4. Eating out: Minimize as much as you can.
5. Bottled Water: Dispenser water or getting a filter may be cost effective
6. Fizzy drinks/Soda: Tempting especially during the hot weather but water satisfies better; always
7. Paper Towels: Let everyone in the house know for how long they have to use one. Sometimes we use paper towels to do what napkins can do.
8. Toilet rolls: Watch out for the children. They sometimes think it’s a toy.
What other things come to mind?
He, who would be master in managing his finances well, must eliminate every waste outlet.
2016 will be a year of Increase ....and Accountability
